ktravers > The host, Ray, was extremely personable and kind, even when Karin corrupted the visiting cat into sitting on her lap, a habit Ray is understandably trying to discourage. We also take in the sights of fruit bats, fluttering overhead.
ktravers > Dinner in the dining area is also a treat indeed. Here Vlad stands at the entrance.

Inexplicably, however, the restaurant does not have a wine list. Karin must dash up to the bar to survey the rather meager offerings (a few bottles of red, and one of white!). Returning with the white, she finds she has missed a sighting of a manicou, a local opossum.

On to Monday 16 February: SCUBA diving and dinner at Jemma's
ktravers > After freshening up, we’re off to an early Valentine’s Day celebration- Karin is taking Vlad to the Arnos Vale Waterwheel restaurant, which is north, toward Plymouth. Ronald, our taxi driver, gives us commentary along the lovely 20 minute drive. After some time, we spot a series of buildings nestled and glowing in the forest- Ronald turns off the road- this is the place- a restaurant built on the site of an old sugar cane factory, with the waterwheel that drove the cane-crushing machinery still standing. It’s an incredible place- ghostly and romantic at the same time. It was a disappointment to hear that there was no musical show that night (these usually occur on Friday nights), but the evening was gorgeous nonetheless.
ktravers > Cocktails on the deck overlooking the waterwheel and assorted decaying, otherworldly machinery are magical.

ktravers > Soon enough, though, we’re back at Speyside, where we stop in at the Manta Lodge, to check out their dive operation. Looks great, and we tell them we’ll see them at 8:00am the next morning.

On the way back, we take advantage of the light to snap some pictures of Speyside’s waterwheel and sugar factory ruins.
